In 2006, co-founder of Naturacopia, David Gee, was a senior executive at a British biotech company focused on developing an anticancer drug, an antiviral drug, and a vaccine adjuvant (immune stimulant) derived from specific iminosugars found in various European plants. His colleague, Professor Robert Nash, served as the Chief Scientific Officer and was the inventor behind the company's product pipeline. Dr. Nash, a world-renowned leader in phytochemistry, particularly in soluble carbohydrates like sugars found in plant species, along with his team at Aberystwyth University in Wales, discovered several intriguing rare plant chemicals, including iminosugars, that exhibited profound effects in cell cultures and later in animal studies. Of particular interest was Casuarine, a natural sugar component (also known as Iminose), which demonstrated activity against tumors and infections in classic animal models of disease. One day, a local honey importer specializing in African honeys visited the laboratory with samples from African villages, claiming that their honey had distinctive health benefits and was utilized as a health supplement by local villagers. He suspected these honeys might possess antiseptic properties, much like the renowned Manuka honey of New Zealand. Professor Nash was astonished to find that the very same lead iminosugar, Casuarine, which they were developing and had isolated from a Mediterranean plant, was present in high concentrations in some batches of the African honey. Remarkably, the honey originated from specific regions of Africa where a close relative of their Mediterranean plant grows. This incredible coincidence revealed that a man living near their research laboratory in deepest Wales brought African wild honey for analysis, which contained nectar from plants closely related to their own, naturally concentrating their candidate drug in the honey. It was a rare moment of fortune and coincidence, uncovering this golden treasure that not only hinted at honey health benefits but also opened up exciting possibilities, including potential applications like honey for pets.

Iminohoney is unique due to its content of the specific iminosugar Casuarine, derived from the Mediterranean plant Myrtus communis. This natural honey is sourced from regions in Africa where this plant species thrives. Bees collect nectar and pollen from these flowering plants, concentrating the valuable iminosugar, Casuarine, in their honey. Only those batches of honey from Africa with a significant concentration of Casuarine are selected, while the others are sold as general honey for human consumption. Iminohoney is a 100% natural honey that boasts a distinctive pleasant taste and color, processed and packaged to meet human food standards. The natural iminosugar Casuarine found in Iminohoney has been shown to boost the immune response in both animal and human cell cultures (data on file) and offers various honey health benefits. This product is particularly beneficial for maintaining quality of life and health conditions in aging individuals. Iminohoney may help strengthen the immune response, especially where it is weak or ineffective against issues like parasites, infections, tumors, and certain chronic health conditions. Offered in convenient single portion 5ml sachets (in boxes of 10), it serves as a supplement that can be given to seniors or senior pets mixed with their food once every three days. However, we do not recommend this honey for pets with diabetes, diabetic individuals, or those suffering from sugar-related metabolic diseases.

All batches of IminoHoney are carefully selected by measuring their natural Casuarine content, which is essential for maximizing the honey health benefits associated with this key component. IminoHoney stands out as the first and only natural honey product specifically selected for its Casuarine levels, making it an excellent choice, even as honey for pets, due to its rich iminosugars.

The honey is pure and nothing has been added. Only honey that has the desired natural iminosugar fingerprint are used to make Iminohoney. Honeys without the iminosugar fingerprint are not selected for Iminohoney and used instead as a food product sold in food stores labeled as African honey. Casuarine is the primary component that we seek and all batches contain this valuable imino sugar.
Simply, yes. The honey is tested for toxins and contaminants and is treated and packaged in food grade facilities. We recommend consultation with a medical professional or veterinarian particularly in those with diabetes or sugar-related metabolic conditions.
No. The natural key component Casuarine that we measure is an immune stimulant (data on file) that benefits both humans and dogs with the same amount of honey. So there is no need to give extra honey to a large dog or human compared to a smaller dog, cat, horse or human. Giving it more frequently than the regimen suggested is unlikely to provide any extra benefit.
There are 10 sachets of honey in each pack. We suggest that optimal benefits can be achieved by taking or giving one sachet every 3 days. Therefore one pack typically lasts one month following these guidelines.
It might be that there could be a benefit from taking/giving the product every day for the first 3 days but we do not yet have evidence to confirm that this is more beneficial than the regimen of one sachet every 3 days that we suggest.
No. Many other honeys from different regions of the world have been tested with complex analytical methods and tools, with no similar iminosugar fingerprint or guaranteed presence of Casuarine in significant concentration. We continue to search but have yet to find alternative honeys to use at this time. IminoHoney is the first and only Casuarine containing natural honey.
Professor Nash has been finding batches of African honey with the desired iminosugar fingerprint for more than 15 years. It is relatively rare and is reliant on the flowers of only one plant species growing in one African region and, of course, the bees too. Disease or climate change could threaten both and disrupt supply in the future. So far, supply has been regular and adequate.
Professor Nash and his company have proprietary methods and patents protecting this discovery so this product remains an exclusive product supplied by Naturacopia as IminoHoney in North America, so no, not at this time.
Manuka honey is high in the toxic methylglyoxal (MGO) (gives the claimed anti-bacterial activity) and has no significant iminosugar content. It certainly does not contain Casuarine. We select our honey for low MGO and measure the iminosugar fingerprint for Casuarine, the key compound to ensure quality control for our product.
While many honeys have health benefits, we have yet to find any with a similar iminosugar fingerprint to that we find with these African honeys. Remember that the honey with the desired fingerprint only come from limited regions of Africa and not all batches from those regions have the desired beneficial fingerprint. As a natural product, honey content vary according to season and what plants are in flower for the bees to forage. We have yet to find other honeys that we can use as Iminohoney - but we are still looking!
Iminohoney has a lot of costs associated with ensuring the product has the best chances of benefits. It is shipped and sourced from Africa to the UK where it is tested to ensure that the iminosugar fingerprint meets with our standards. The tests used are complex, high precision and high quality methods. Some batches are rejected when the fingerprint (including Casuarine content) does not meet our standards. The final product is packaged at a high quality food packaging company and then, finally shipped the Naturacopia in the US. There are a lot of high cost steps in getting Iminohoney from the wilds of Africa to you but we think that its worth it.

From Africa to you via the UK, Iminohoney undergoes a long and complex journey, adhering to exacting standards before being packaged and shipped. This natural honey, enriched with iminosugars, not only serves as a delightful treat but also offers numerous honey health benefits, making it suitable for both humans and even honey for pets, such as our Casuarine variety.
